Welcome back to our Pressure Gauge Professional Knowledge Series. In our previous article, we learned the basic definition and core formula of pressure. Today, we will continue to sort out four essential industrial pressure concepts: gauge pressure, positive pressure, negative pressure and vacuum degree. These basic terms are the premise to correctly read, use and select high pressure gauge, 6 pressure gauge and air gauge pressure measuring equipment, and are widely used in pneumatic systems, hydraulic equipment and vacuum industrial scenarios.

1. What is Gauge Pressure?

Gauge pressure is the most commonly used pressure reference standard in industrial measurement. It takes standard atmospheric pressure as the zero reference point and represents the pressure value that is higher or lower than atmospheric pressure. Gauge pressure is generally denoted as p₉.
Most conventional industrial gauges, including air gauge pressure meters and general-purpose pressure gauges, are designed based on the gauge pressure standard. It is the core measurement basis for daily industrial pressure monitoring.

2. What is Positive Pressure?

Taking atmospheric pressure as the benchmark, positive pressure refers to the pressure state that is higher than atmospheric pressure, which is the most common pressure condition in industrial production. Positive pressure is generally denoted as p.
Scenarios such as pipeline gas transmission, mechanical hydraulic pressurization and equipment internal pressurization all belong to positive pressure working conditions. High pressure gauge and 6 pressure gauge are mostly applied to detect and control positive pressure values to ensure the stable operation of industrial equipment.

3. What is Negative Pressure (Vacuum)?

Contrary to positive pressure, negative pressure (also called vacuum state) refers to the pressure value lower than atmospheric pressure, with atmospheric pressure as the reference standard. It is generally denoted asp,.
Negative pressure measurement is widely used in vacuum packaging, vacuum adsorption equipment and laboratory vacuum environments. Professional pressure gauges need to be matched according to the negative pressure range to ensure accurate measurement data.

4. What is Vacuum Degree?

Vacuum degree is a special pressure measurement concept. Different from negative pressure which takes atmospheric pressure as the reference, vacuum degree takes the zero point of absolute pressure as the benchmark, and specifically refers to the pressure value lower than atmospheric pressure. It is generally denoted as V.
In industrial vacuum system debugging, vacuum degree is the key index to judge the vacuum effect of equipment, which is of great significance for the precise selection and calibration of vacuum pressure gauges.
